‘The tech industry is dominated by men, but STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) are fields where girls can excel. That was the message at the third annual “Expanding Your Horizons” event at UH Manoa.

On Saturday, Hawaii’s top scientists, engineers and specialists gave hands-on lessons to girls in middle school. From botany to astronomy, those in attendance could choose between 20 different workshops.

The free event aims to engage young women in STEM careers by providing exciting and fun hands-on learning experiences as well as opportunities to meet female role models who are active in math and science related fields.

“To actually interact with women who do this as their job – they love it. They are passionate about it, and to see themselves in the mentors, they can be inspired to pursue those careers later on,” said Dr. Jennifer Griswold, Event Director and UH Meteorology Professor.

“Expanding Your Horizons” plans to have the STEM conference every April.
